Is your app name free? Check both stores and the domains in one question

Before you fall in love with a name, ask. Builders HQ searches the App Store and Google Play for the exact name, names that start with it and similar ones, checks the likely Android package ids and the domains, and gives each name a verdict.

A conversation: someone asks "Are these app names free: Snapfolio, Notely, Trailmix?"; the assistant calls Builders HQ's check_app_name tool and answers with a table (Name, Verdict, Who has it, .com). None of the three is clear: small apps already use each name on the stores and every .com is registered. You could still publish with a longer title, but people searching the name would find them first.
Real answer, 22 October 2026, App Store and Google Play (US). The assistant called check_app_name with names: ["Snapfolio", "Notely", "Trailmix"], country: "US".

Why it is hard today

Apple allows one app per name

You find out the name is taken when App Store Connect refuses it, after the logo and the domain are bought.

Search is per store and per country

Checking two stores, ten candidate names and three domains is sixty searches.

"Free" is not enough

A name can be legally free and still useless if a big app fills the search results for it.

How it works

  1. Add Builders HQ to your assistant and sign in.
  2. Give it up to ten candidate names, and the country if it is not the US.
  3. Read the verdict for each (taken, avoid, used, crowded, similar or free) with the apps and domains behind it.

Questions

Which stores and countries does it check?

Apple's App Store and Google Play, in the store country you choose (the US by default).

Does it see names reserved but not released?

No. It sees live apps only; a name someone reserved in App Store Connect but never released shows only there.

Which domains does it check?

.com, .app and .ai by default, or up to six endings you choose, through public registration data (RDAP).
